Christopher Avery: Your Leadership Gift

by Anna Kulakowska

"No one raindrop thinks it caused the flood".
This phrase describes the social phenomenon called the diffusion of responsibility. It manifests itself by decreased level of motivation.

I dare say that the leadership gift is to a great extent a responsibility gift. Our mindset and culture determines whether our teams work together cohesively. And working together is primarily about sharing the responsibility.

Responsibility is not the same as accountability. The two terms may seen similar, but they represent two distinct concepts. While accountability is more about how we delegate work, it is outside of us. Others hold us to account for something.

Responsibility, on the other hand, is internal. It is transient and subjective. A gifted leader moves away from blaming. The leadership gift is about being in charge, being responsible and taking the full ownership of all our relationships and issues at individual, team, and organization level. This highly responsible approach is at the core of agility! Responsibility is also the central point for every team member to realize that every drop counts…
