Wouldn’t it be great to go to a conference that included all of the topics that are most interesting to you? A conference that addressed your most pressing questions?
That’s what the Open Space sessions are for. It’s the part of the conference that you get to design.
Before the Open Space sessions, you’ll have an opportunity to propose discussions on any topic that interests you during the OpenSpace Market and everyone at the conference who shares your interests will meet for a conversation. Some will come with stories to share or ideas. Some will come to explore the topic and learn more. Some will come just to listen. But everyone will be there because they, too, are interested in the same topic or in solving the same problem that you are.
With so many people in the same room having such a broad variety of experiences, open spaces provide an excellent opportunity to learn from each other, and craft the conference of your dreams.
Open Space has one Law of Two Feets
The Law of Two Feet means you take responsibility for what you care about. If any person finds themselves in a situation where they are neither learning nor contributing, they must use their feet and go to some more productive place.
Open Space has four Principles
Four principles apply to how you navigate in Open Space.
Whoever comes are the right people
Whoever is attracted to the conversation are the people who can contribute most to that conversation, because they care.
Whatever happens is the only thing that could have
We are all limited by our own pasts and expectations. This principle acknowledges we'll all do our best to focus on the present time and place and not get bogged down in what could've or should've happened.
Whenever it starts is the right time
The creative spirit has its own time, and our task is to make our best contribution and enter the flow of creativity when it starts.
When it’s over, it’s over
Creativity has its own rhythm. Pay attention to the flow of creativity. It's not about the time. When you think it is over ask the group. And if it is, go on to the next thing you have a passion for. If it’s not, continue the conversation.
